Pros:

  • They render a really nice, warm image.

  • They flare beautifully. The “Vintage-Set” even more so.

  • They have superb bokeh wide open.

  • Focus breathing is acceptable.

  • They make you feel special.

Cons:

  • No two lenses are the same size, dimensions, or weight.

  • They focus the “wrong” way around. Thank you, Nikon.

  • Chromatic abberations can be an issue wide open.

  • The lenses expand and contract when focussing, so a rod-mounted matte box is not practical. Instead, a lightweight lens-mounted Bright Tangerine Misfit Atom is included in the rental*.

About the “Cine-Set”:

These Nikon Nikkor lenses were developed and produced in the 1980s and are the culmination of decades of experience. They are of Nikkors last generation of all-manual 35mm stills lenses. Some of these lenses were so popular, that they were still manufactured brand-new as late as 2015! They are made entirely of metal, are compact and very sturdy, albeit not weather sealed. They are generally very sharp when stopped down to f/4 and become softer, creamier and more hipster the more you open them up. They aren’t as sharp, as fast or as practical as proper cine-primes, but hey, that’s not what you came here for! I refurbish the lenses myself. I clean, re-grease and declick them, change the mount and 3D-print the focus gears.
